Aarhus
An overnight stopover in Aarhus
Aarhus (Århus) is the second-largest city in Denmark; it’s located on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula, in the geographical centre of Denmark. Aarhus is a student city and hence it has a young and fresh vibe to it. On the other hand, it also offers great architectural artworks and easily competes with bigger cities in sightseeing options. As I didn’t have much time to spend in Aarhus, I chose the top two attractions.
Den Gamle By
First and most worthwhile visiting is of course Den Gamle By, which is the old town open-air museum of Aarhus. The museum is awarded the maximum three stars in the Michelin Travel Guide (this fixation with Michelin stars must be some Danish thing). Den Gamle By is aiming to embark the visitors on a journey back in history, by featuring centuries-old timbered houses with people dressed and acting in time-related surroundings. Some of the buildings originate from towns all over Denmark and have been re-erected on the museum’s grounds.

ARoS Aarhus Art Museum
ARoS Aarhus Art Museum is one of the largest art museums in Northern Europe and with about one million visitors per year it is the most frequented art museum in Scandinavia. ARoS showcasts very interesting contemporary works and offers lots of exhibitions and activities all year round. You can recognize it from afar by its roof with the rainbow panorama. There you can walk around in a 150 metre long, circular panoramic path with 360º views of the surrounding city. This amazing artwork was made by the Danish/Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.
Aarhus is an amazing city and I wish I had more time to explore it. Next time I’ll definitely visit other attractions, I even made this preliminary list:
- The underground Viking Museum – explores early local history.
- Aarhus Cathedral – with its restored 14th- to 16th-century frescoes.
- The greenhouses of the Aarhus Botanical Garden.
- Moesgaard Museum (MOMU), where prehistory is presented innovatively in a breathtaking architectural setting
- the wooden pier and work of art – The Infinite Bridge – by Varna Beach/Ballehage Beach in Aarhus.
I would definitely recommend visiting Aarhus and would gladly take your tips on what to visit there into consideration.
Thanks for reading this post and hope you like the picture I made in Aarhus.
